Base fee:

This workshop will be taught by POGIL facilitators Mare Sullivan and Michael Garoutte.  Registration will be handled directly through Seattle Pacific University.  Interested individuals should contact Mare Sullivan for registration information.

Course Description:  In this four-day course, you will implement a practical model for writing and assessing guided-inquiry activities.  You will  use your new skills to write, receive feedback on, and revise two or three mini-activities.  Although the instructors' expertise in in grade 7-college level sciences, this method can be adapted for use with many disciplines.  As secondary teachers move toward fuller adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards and/or the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics by implementing inquiry-based learning in their classrooms, one significant obstacle they encounter is the scarcity of robust guided-inquiry activities.  This course helps teachers overcome the obstacle.

Course Prerequisites:  You must have completed either a one-day POGIL workshop led by a POGIL-approved facilitator or attended a POGIL Regional Workshop before enrolling in this course.  The Seattle Pacific University course "Teaching with Your Mouth Closed" (EDSC 5714) meets this requirement.  This requirement ensures adequate mastery of the basic POGIL activity structure, process skills, and classroom facilitation skills you will need to succeed in this intensive writing course.

Registration Fee:  The registration fee of $745 includes all workshop materials and 4 breakfasts and 4 lunches (Monday-Thursday).  Dinners will be the responsibility of the participant.

Housing:  On-campus housing for four nights is available for an additional fee of $35-70 per night.

Graduate Credits: Participants who successfully complete the course will earn 3 graduate quarter credits through Seattle Pacific University.  Participants will be required to submit two short activity self-assessments during the retreat. They will also submit a short reflection based on a 5-question prompt.  The reflection is due no later than July 27, 2018.
