1. Supporting the NGSS with Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry Learning (POGIL) Immerse yourself in collaborative learning to experience POGIL from a student's perspective. You will experience group roles, analyze the design of guided inquiry activities, and explore the connections between POGIL strategies and NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. These strategies support students including English language learners, students with learning disabilities, students with autism spectrum disorders, and students in gifted/talented programs. (This short course will take place on Oct. 21.) 2. New POGIL Activities to Teach Basic Concepts of Evolution Immerse yourself in a process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) environment as you work through two new guided inquiry activities. These activities will help your students to 1) make sense of phylogenetic (evolutionary) trees and 2) hypothesize relationships among species by using observable physical characteristics and genetic data as empirical evidence. 3. Differentiating Homework by Using Online Simulations and Videos In this session participants will practice developing LS, PS, or ESS homework assignments that allow students to perform on a wide variety of levels. Each assignment incorporates online PhET simulations and/or Crash Course videos. Student-friendly assignment templates standardize the tasks, making performance expectations clearer for students and assessment easier for teachers.
